If you’re a fan of both classic romance novels and thrillers, then consider getting the best of both worlds with these nine books that feature passion, intrigue, and a healthy dose of mystery.

Stormy Weather

The sun felt like it was burning into her skin. Even SPF-25 didn’t stand up to the wind burn.

It was just too easy to be lazy and lie there on the towel. The wind was kicking up and she felt grains of sand skitter across her skin every now and then. She wasn’t alone, there were a few diehards still on the beach. Running feet kicked up clumps of sand and finally annoyed her enough to sit up and dust herself off.

“Surfers,” she mumbled and shook her head. Storms always brought them out. The wind kicked up the surf and the waves swelled. Debbie was compelled to watch two figures riding a huge crest and cringed when she saw one tumble into the crashing foam, his board flying in after him.

Groaning, she finally stood and brushed some of the sand from her arms. Debbie walked to the water’s edge and was amazed to realize how much closer it was to the towel she was lying on than when she first picked out a spot. At least she would get her feet wet before she packed up her belongings and trudged back to the hotel.

She was standing in ankle deep water when a wave crashed into her at chest height. She was knocked off balance and wound up sitting in the wet sand as the water threatened to pull her in. The salty water passed her lips and she sputtered and tried to catch her breath.

“You okay?” A bronze god squatted beside her. His hand rested on her back to support her in case she actually collapsed.

Cough, cough. “Yeah,” cough, “I’m fine.” She paused and cleared her throat. “That wave just surprised me.”

He stood and stretched a hand out. “Obviously a tourist.” He smiled.

Debbie stood, she deliberately avoided his help. “Is that an insult?”

“No,” Adonis’ twin laughed. “It was a guess. This is obviously your first hurricane and since we have them every year I figured that you’re either a brand new resident or, most probably, just visiting for a few days. So which is it?”

She didn’t look up at him. “I’m here on vacation.”

“Hah! I was right.”

Debbie looked out at the horizon. “How bad does it get?” It almost looked like sets of back curtains were billowing from the clouds. She walked back to her towel and straw bag and just assumed he’d follow her.

“Oh baby,” he paused while she bent to pick her things up. “It hasn’t even started. The storm is still pretty far off. Besides it’s only a category two.”

She looked back as she bent over and was annoyed to catch his leer. “Are you enjoying the show?” She sounded cynical.

Patches of red tinged his cheeks. His embarrassment surprised her.

“Sorry.” He looked back at the water. “I’m Bruce.”

She nodded in acknowledgment but didn’t bother to return the courtesy. “So how long before this hurricane actually hits?” Turning towards the hotel, she wrapped a clean towel around her waist.

“We’ve got about twelve or fourteen hours.” Bruce fell into step next to her “Where are you from?”

“Philadelphia.”

He hoped she’d be a little more forthcoming. She wasn’t. They kept walking. “So why are you in Miami Beach?”

She stopped. “I’m on vacation.” Debbie turned to look at him. She stood with a hand on a hip. “Thank you for your help in the water. But I’m not the kind of woman that picks up a vacation fling in case that’s why you’re following me.”

“Don’t worry. I’m not interested in being a tourist attraction.”

Rekindled

“Cynthia?”

The sound of that voice saying her name, a name she rarely heard anymore, froze her insides. Cindy dropped the folder she was filing and turned around slowly. The memory of the voice was clearer than the memory of the face she saw.

“My God, you haven’t changed a bit.” He smiled for a moment before a frown of disappointment appeared. “It’s Daniel, Danny —”

“I… I know. What are you doing here?”

Stepping back to steady herself against the desk, she gestured to the hallway around the nurses’ station she was standing at.

“I have an appointment with,” he pulled a paper from his pocket, “Dr. Callen.”

“Oh no.” It was impulse that made her suddenly rest her hand on his arm.

“What’s the matter?”

“Oh Danny I’m so sorry.”

Daniel looked confused. “Why are you sorry?”

She dropped her hand from his arm, “Why are you seeing an oncologist?”

It took a moment and then he laughed. “I’m not a patient. I’m a doctor and I was asked to consult on a case.”

“Oh,” she looked embarrassed. “I… I’m glad that you’re okay, I didn’t know you were a doctor.” She shrugged and started to look away.

He sighed. “It’s been a lot of years. There’s been a lot of changes… I’m sure a lot has gone on with you too.” He looked at his wristwatch and shook his head. “I don’t want to keep Callen waiting. Look are you nearly done with your patients?” He sounded like he was all-business.

She inhaled sharply. “I’m not a doctor. I work in admissions.”

“Oh, my turn to be embarrassed. I assumed, I mean you always talked about going to medical school.” Daniel’s voice was filled with both surprise and question.

“Things changed,” she sounded sad.

from the short story

Not Alone

I ignored the changing numbers on the alarm clock as long as I could. I still refused to believe that anything that had happened over the past few days was real. It was all a nightmare, that’s all.

As my toes sought the warmth of my slippers, the tears began to fall again. No matter how many times I tried to deny it, my best friend was buried yesterday. They wouldn’t let Jordan come to the cemetery; every-one blamed him. Even me.

For the two days that Jordan had been hospitalized, they kept him under a suicide watch. That angered him. Not because he wanted to commit suicide, but because it meant that people thought he would want to take “the coward’s way out” as he put it and avoid facing what had happened. He said it wasn’t his fault, but he still blamed himself.

I left the party that night early, too early to know everything that had transpired. Kimmie’s boyfriend dumped her, he left her at the party while he went home with another girl. She was upset and she drank more than she should have. Actually, she shouldn’t have been drinking at all; most of the folks at the party were under the legal drinking age – but that’s another issue altogether.

Eventually Kimmie wanted to go home and, as it was explained to me, she had trouble even holding onto the keys from her handbag. So Jordan offered to drive her. He drank a beer early in the evening; he was one of the few who could legally, and then he hadn’t had anything else. That was hours earlier. The cops even said that his blood alcohol level was well below the legal limits. Jordan was just trying to be a nice guy; besides, he had once had a thing for Kimmie.

I visited Jordan in his hospital room right after I heard about the accident. I didn’t even know that Kimmie was dead yet. Jordan was devastated. He didn’t need to have his friend’s condition confirmed; he knew…

It was 1985 and the little town I loved in was horrified at the murder that captured newspaper headlines. The site of the murder was just a few minutes from my home.

Using my EMT skills, I used to work in the infirmary of a local summer day camp in those years. Every day, as I drove to work, I went past the driveway leading to the smokehouse where the victim’s body had been burned beyond recognition. The police caught the murderer and the trial replaced the actual murder headlines.

But each time I passed the mailbox at the end of the crime scene driveway I was filled with an unease, there were nights when the horror at what had occurred there just wouldn’t leave my mind and I would lay awake staring at the ceiling.

When I wrote Final Sin I used a mental image of the crime scene that had haunted my town and I developed a different crime, a crime that included a body that had been set on fire. But that is where the similarity ended…

… Deputy Sheriff Commander Jake Carson has his hands full with the investigation of a brutal multiple homicide, a troubled son and a vindictive ex-wife when he meets young, free-spirited paramedic Julie Jennings. He is immediately drawn to her and finds himself unexpectedly falling in love. Julie finds herself just as drawn to him. When Julie becomes the subject of an obsession, it puts both of their lives in extreme danger… Romance…danger…adventure…suspense…another great Chelle Cordero novel sure to grab readers from many genre!

Final Sin was an Honorable Mention in the
Fiction Category of the
2010 NY Book Festival
