4 Tips to Help Authors Sell More Books
Want to Attract More Readers? – Publishing Sales Coach Offers Helpful Insight

By mid-2014, self-published authors began taking home the bulk of all ebook author earnings generated on Amazon.com. Meanwhile, authors published by all of the Big Five publishers—Penguin Random House, HarperCollins, Hachette, Macmillan and Simon & Schuster—combined slipped into second place, according to the January 2015 Author Earnings Report. As a direct result, more and more authors are in the driver’s seat when it comes to the sales and marketing of their books.

“I’ve received several emails via LinkedIn over the years from newly self-published authors who were promoting their books, trying to convince me to buy them. If you’re one of these authors, I genuinely applaud you for taking that important step toward self-promotion,” says Staflund, founder and publisher at Polished Publishing Group (PPG), www.polishedpublishinggroup.com. “Unfortunately, 99 percent of the contacts you emailed never purchased your book because your message was flawed in one or, perhaps, all of the following ways.”

WIIFM: What’s In It for Me?

This is what all our customers are asking themselves, whether consciously or unconsciously, whenever they consider making a purchase: what’s in it for me? All salespeople need to be aware of the WIIFM acronym and be sure they’re answering that question in all of their marketing materials, in a clear and concise manner that speaks to customers in their language.

Being “clear” means telling them what’s in it for them in a manner that addresses their needs directly. Will your book increase their joy? If yes, how? Will your book decrease their pain? If yes, how?

Being “concise” means telling them what’s in it for them in as few words as possible. We live in an “instant soup” society filled with customers that want quick and easy solutions to their problems. Your materials are best received when someone makes up their own mind to review them—not when they’ve been interrupted by a long, drawn out, unsolicited email on LinkedIn or elsewhere.

And “speaking to them in their language” means communicating what’s in it for them in a manner that they will understand and appreciate most. Two of the marketing languages you may choose from are price-based marketing and value-based marketing.

TOMA: Top of Mind Awareness

Your target market is a fluid and ever-changing stream of old and new customers. You need to stay in front of them so that, when they’re ready to buy whatever type of book it is you’re selling, they’ll recall your book ahead of all the others. In the world of advertising and marketing, this is known as creating top of mind awareness.

Some of the traditional ways that businesses create top of mind awareness are to place regular ads on television, radio, and billboards, or in print media outlets such as magazines and newspapers. Repetition is the key to success in any advertising campaign, and this can get pretty expensive in these traditional arenas. We’re talking hundreds, maybe even thousands of dollars per month to run enough ads to achieve top of mind awareness with the general public, depending on how large a trading area you’re trying to reach. Luckily, authors have a virtually free online alternative known as blogging that utilizes the power of keywords to draw people in from anywhere in the world that has Internet access. And, authors also have the benefit of free social media websites to super-charge those blogging campaigns.

An Attractive, Accessible Storefront

All your blogging and social media marketing efforts will be profitless unless you’re using those vehicles to consistently redirect people to the webpage where they can buy your book. Make it quick and easy for them to find the place to buy your book once they’ve read that compelling blog post or viewed that interesting tweet on Twitter. Make the page so attractive that they will want the book even more.

Convenient, User-friendly Purchase Options

Some people are more comfortable with online shopping than others. Where one customer may want to pay for a purchase using PayPal, another will prefer to pay via their favourite credit card. Some still prefer an old-fashioned “pay by cheque or money order” option. The more purchase options you can provide, the more convenient and user-friendly your online storefront will appear. It’s the equivalent of casting a much wider net to catch a greater variety of fish.

Everyone ends the year with a look back, and resolutions and wishes for bright new year; I’m no different.

2014 was a year of highs and lows in my personal life. I lost a very dear cousin this year, younger than me and a wonderful friend and confidant, and like the rest of the family I miss her.

2014 was also the year that our son, our youngest, took a bride. The wedding was magnificent (the kids did it themselves), our new daughter-in-law is beautiful, and both of them are very happy with each other. Our oldest child, a daughter, was married in 2007 to an absolutely wonderful man. As parents it is a blessing to look at your precious children and know that they have partners who will love them, care for them and stand by their side.

So 2014 is also the year that my husband and I — with 39 years of marriage under our belts — are now back to being “just a couple”… although honestly once you are parents you never stop.

Mark and I are now in a position to look seriously at our future, we’re not as young as we were the last time we were “just a couple”. We’re looking at our home, it’s a beautiful home and one where we raised our family, and we are talking about downsizing and living in a home that will allow us to grow old (in 30 or 40 years…) comfortably. It’s a fascinating study to examine your own life and see how your priorities change through the years.

Looking forward to 2015 I plan to do a lot more writing. I had a holiday themed short story published in 2014 but most of my published writing was in the non-fiction journalistic world instead of the novels I so love penning. I’m good at the articles though, please forgive my ego, and I would love to hear if you come across any of my articles the next time you thumb through your local paper. Since I often write for a company that sells supplements to various North American publications, you might actually get to read my non-fiction work now and then, and I would love to hear about it; I write under the my name as Chelle Cordero.

The 17th Annual Preditors and Editors Readers’ Poll is open for voting through January 14 and I’d like to ask for your support and votes for me and my fellow Vanilla Heart Publishing authors – I would love to see a strong VHP showing this year. Please take a look at my recommended list here.

Another important goal belongs to my family. My brother-in-law, Del, needs a kidney and we’ve been reaching out for potential living donors; a living donor is really the best chance for a recipient. As my sister explains, “Many years ago Del was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) a genetic disorder characterized by the growth of numerous cysts in the kidneys. In 1968 Del lost a kidney to PKD and has been managing for the past 46 years with his remaining kidney.”  If you know of someone, or yourself, who would consider donating a kidney (the average person has 2 but you only need 1), please consider getting tested: please contact Robert Wood Johnson Transplant Center, New Brunswick, NJ at (732) 253-3699 or 1-877-NUKIDNEY and follow the prompts for the living donor program. Tell them you are calling on behalf of Del Du-Bois.. Even if you are not a compatible match, there are “Paired Donations“, you can give a kidney to a stranger and in turn save a loved one’s life. Please help spread the word about our need — hang a note on your church/synagogue/temple bulletin board, notify folks at work, talk it up at your social club — we appreciate anything you can do to help us.

My wish for all of you in the coming year is peace, happiness, good health, the love and warmth of family and friends, shelter and security, success in your endeavors, and as many good things that can possibly come your way. I hope your celebration is fun, memorably pleasant and safe.

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your life.

~Chelle

VBT to go…

Your book is a reality and you are anxious to get the buzz going. Maybe your “local” bookstores are few and far between, or you e-published your work and it’s not so easy to display, or you just can’t take the time away from your family or “other” job to travel to multiple sites and sit for hours. Then again, sitting in a bookstore may only generate a handful of responses and limited contacts. Thanks to our current technologies and the World Wide Web, planning a Virtual Blog Tour (VBT) is a cost effective and time efficient option. For those who may not be familiar with the term, an author “visits” a number of blogs during a specified amount of time with guests posts, excerpts, interview responses, blurbs and more. The tour period can be as short as two weeks or as long as six months and there can be as few as fifteen stops or as many as one-hundred. Your “visit” remains there long after you’ve “packed up” and gone home so many, many people all over the world can see it.There are professional VBT organizers and promoters and many are worth their weight (and fee) in platinum – the key to what these pros offer is organization and time. A Virtual Blog Tour is something you can do for yourself as well if you can stay organized, focused and disciplined.

Whether you hire a professional to plan out your tour or do it yourself, there is still a lot of work that YOU must do: write up guest posts on various topics, answer several interview questions (often just a few questions per site), make graphics such as book covers and author shots available, write up a short bio, and most important of all, visit EACH site the day of your appearance (and for a few days after) to respond to comments.

Start by scouring the web for blogs that attract your audience (for instance, a romance reader probably wouldn’t be frequenting a blog with scientific journal articles) and query the blog owner (via email, NOT comments) if they would consider being a stop on a blog tour. (You might want to offer reciprocation, more on that later). If they say yes decide on a date and be clear about word count, what they expect from you (promo, no promo, graphics, interview, etc) and the date they need your submission.

It’s a good idea to keep a calendar or “assignment book” and list the date or your appearance, the URL of the blog, the specifics of what you are to provide and the “due date” so that you do not miss any deadlines or opportunities. Once you have a list of dates and appearances, post this list on your own blog or website, and publicize it through forums, email lists and social networks. The advantage to the person hosting your visit should be increased traffic to their site so publicize it thoroughly; ideally they will also be publicizing the event.

Be sure to stop by each blog on the day of your visit, and perhaps for the few days following, and be sure to respond to any comments visitors have left. Responding to comments makes the tour very personal and followers will feel that they have had a chance to get to know you. Don’t be disheartened if there are not a lot of remarks, some authors offer free books or other giveaways to generate comments. Be sure to post your own comment thanking the host for having you there.

If you have your own blog (and you definitely should as an author), you can offer reciprocal visits and benefit by increased traffic to your site. Use key words or tags and help search engines pick up your postings more readily. Each time a new visitor comes to your site because they are following another author you are hosting, you have gained exposure and may even find someone new following your regularly scheduled blog.

Keeping the buzz alive and making stops at other blogs can and should be continuous; it doesn’t always have to be a new book that you are promoting. Promote your backlist on an anniversary date, a milestone, or use a current news item to promote a theme. You can post a widget from a site like *BookTour.com and have a running list of both live and virtual appearances for blog visitors to see.

Writing exercise: Write an instruction guide for a common, everyday chore (housework, driving, dressing, making a phone call, etc.). Avoid making a simple list and using mere phrases. Write this instructional guide in the form of paragraphs and complete sentences. Make it detailed so that even if someone has never used a telephone they will know how to make a telephone call, etc.

Writing prompt: Using the seven numbers of your telephone number, in any order, write a very brief story about people sitting around a dinner table (how many people, how many dinner rolls, etc).

Very much enjoyed the sample and attempted to order – unfortunately I have the Kindle Fire and the blog isn’t available on the Fire.

MY RECOMMENDATION: YES

AMAZON SUBSCRIPTION LINK: Living, Breathing, Writing, by Chelle Cordero

WEB ADDRESS: Couldn’t find it, but this is the author’s personal blog:http://chellecordero.blogspot.com/
BLOG DESCRIPTION: All about writing and being a writer

MY REVIEW: This is an excellent blog for the aspiring writer, and I highly recommend it. The author teaches you the craft of writing, and what to do when you’ve been published.

There’s only a couple of drawbacks. There’s only one post a week – but now that all blogs are only 99 cents, it’s well worth it to subscribe.

Also, the font is huge. Not quite sure what settings the author has her blog on, but if you’ve got vision problems it won’t matter with this blog!

I’d share a sample post but I was unable to find this particular blog on the web (although the author has her own personal blog there, linked above), so not quite sure where the feed comes from.

Nevertheless, people who want to learn the craft of writing would do well to subscribe to this blog.
