Touch of Love

Short Story Collection

 by Chelle Cordero

An Empty House: You never know what tomorrow will bring. This is a personal essay about coping with and moving on with the “New Normal”.

The Lost Love: Rejected for her Mexican heritage by the teen-age boy she had a crush on, Lindsay put it behind her. So how come, when they wind up at the same college years later, Lindsay can’t get over her anger at the humiliation? And will Brad ever forgive himself for his callous behavior?

The Dead Guy in the Park: An almost end-of-shift call leads a paramedic and her partner to a dead guy in the park. All she has to do is pronounce him so that the coroner can come get the body. What could possibly go wrong?
*includes a bonus Spanish edition El Difunto del Parque translated by Marianna Carranza

Rekindled: Cynthia and Daniel were college sweethearts torn apart by tragedy. A lifetime later they bump into each other again — Is this their second chance at love?

A Date with Mistletoe: Sometimes you find that it’s the “Unanswered Prayers” that are the best things to ever happen. When confronted by the man of yesterday alongside the man who means the world to her, there is no doubt in Rachel’s mind that she has the best.

He is My Brother…: Who can help save the life of a beloved family member? Prayers, hopes and a personal plea for help.

Always, One More Time: Disowned by her parents because of an interracial love affair, Callie Sanders is left alone to raise her son after his father, Jimmy Bernerd, dies fighting in a war on the other side of the world. Desperate to give her son a family she goes to the Bernerd household — what she finds is a second chance at love, acceptance, and family.

Everyone ends the year with a look back, and resolutions and wishes for bright new year; I’m no different.

2014 was a year of highs and lows in my personal life. I lost a very dear cousin this year, younger than me and a wonderful friend and confidant, and like the rest of the family I miss her.

2014 was also the year that our son, our youngest, took a bride. The wedding was magnificent (the kids did it themselves), our new daughter-in-law is beautiful, and both of them are very happy with each other. Our oldest child, a daughter, was married in 2007 to an absolutely wonderful man. As parents it is a blessing to look at your precious children and know that they have partners who will love them, care for them and stand by their side.

So 2014 is also the year that my husband and I — with 39 years of marriage under our belts — are now back to being “just a couple”… although honestly once you are parents you never stop.

Mark and I are now in a position to look seriously at our future, we’re not as young as we were the last time we were “just a couple”. We’re looking at our home, it’s a beautiful home and one where we raised our family, and we are talking about downsizing and living in a home that will allow us to grow old (in 30 or 40 years…) comfortably. It’s a fascinating study to examine your own life and see how your priorities change through the years.

Looking forward to 2015 I plan to do a lot more writing. I had a holiday themed short story published in 2014 but most of my published writing was in the non-fiction journalistic world instead of the novels I so love penning. I’m good at the articles though, please forgive my ego, and I would love to hear if you come across any of my articles the next time you thumb through your local paper. Since I often write for a company that sells supplements to various North American publications, you might actually get to read my non-fiction work now and then, and I would love to hear about it; I write under the my name as Chelle Cordero.

The 17th Annual Preditors and Editors Readers’ Poll is open for voting through January 14 and I’d like to ask for your support and votes for me and my fellow Vanilla Heart Publishing authors – I would love to see a strong VHP showing this year. Please take a look at my recommended list here.

Another important goal belongs to my family. My brother-in-law, Del, needs a kidney and we’ve been reaching out for potential living donors; a living donor is really the best chance for a recipient. As my sister explains, “Many years ago Del was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) a genetic disorder characterized by the growth of numerous cysts in the kidneys. In 1968 Del lost a kidney to PKD and has been managing for the past 46 years with his remaining kidney.”  If you know of someone, or yourself, who would consider donating a kidney (the average person has 2 but you only need 1), please consider getting tested: please contact Robert Wood Johnson Transplant Center, New Brunswick, NJ at (732) 253-3699 or 1-877-NUKIDNEY and follow the prompts for the living donor program. Tell them you are calling on behalf of Del Du-Bois.. Even if you are not a compatible match, there are “Paired Donations“, you can give a kidney to a stranger and in turn save a loved one’s life. Please help spread the word about our need — hang a note on your church/synagogue/temple bulletin board, notify folks at work, talk it up at your social club — we appreciate anything you can do to help us.

My wish for all of you in the coming year is peace, happiness, good health, the love and warmth of family and friends, shelter and security, success in your endeavors, and as many good things that can possibly come your way. I hope your celebration is fun, memorably pleasant and safe.

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your life.

~Chelle

A MEMBER OF MY FAMILY IS
IN URGENT NEED OF A
KIDNEY TRANSPLANT!

Hi everyone, this beautiful couple is my sister Bobi and her husband Del,
as you can tell by this picture, they are very much in love.

But Del needs YOUR help ~ he needs a kidney.

Living donors offer recipients the best chances for a healthy life.
You can be tested to find out if you are compatible.
Please help by getting tested and spreading the word.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Here’s a letter from my sister:

Many years ago Del was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) a genetic disorder characterized by the growth of numerous cysts in the kidneys. In 1968 Del lost a kidney to PKD and has been managing for the past 46 years with his remaining kidney. Recently his condition has worsened, the enlarging cysts are severely impacting the function of this kidney and it is failing. Del has been told he requires a kidney transplant as soon as possible. His best chances are a kidney from a living donor. Recipients of a living donor kidney live longer and healthier lives.

Time is of the essence so we are reaching out to as many people as we can to alert them to Del’s critical condition. You can make a difference. Please help spread the word to your family members, friends, co-workers, or any groups you are affiliated with. The more people we reach the greater the probability we can find a suitable kidney match for Del.

If you or anyone you know is willing to be tested to see if you are a compatible match for donation please contact Robert Wood Johnson Transplant Center, New Brunswick, NJ at (732) 253-3699 or 1-877-NUKIDNEY and follow the prompts for the living donor program. Tell them you are calling on behalf of Del Du-Bois.

Thank you so much,

Barbara Cordero Du-Bois and family

Some facts :

– We are born with 2 kidneys but can survive with one.

– Polycystic Kidney Disease is a genetic disorder so family members can be affected and are not good donor candidates.

– People with the most common type of PKD progress to kidney failure also called end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

– Living donor transplants represent the best opportunity for a positive long-term outcome.

– Transplants from a live donor has the benefit of lasting twice as long as a kidney from a deceased donor.

– The wait for a deceased donor could take 5 to 7 or more years.

– While the number of people requiring a kidney transplant has been increasing each year, the number of transplants received has remained at a stable and alarmingly low level over the years.

– According to the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse there are 101,047 individuals awaiting a kidney as of August 21, 2014 and since January to May of this year 11,845 people who received transplants of which 2,280 came from live donors.

Even if YOU do not have a compatible blood type please get tested to see if you can participate in the MatchingDonors.com Paired Exchange Program ~ “if a donor and patient can be found who have the opposite blood type incompatibility, kidneys can be exchanged between the two pairs and two compatible live donor transplants are possible.”   http://t.co/qHOd1brnTd
