An author is often asked “How do you come up with your story ideas?” My answer is “Life”. If you keep your eyes and ears open things happen all around you, the unexpected, triumphs and tragedies, gains and losses, and mysteries. Often the tears you shed will transfer to a fictional character’s emotional moment and your readers will feel the genuine tug on their own heart. (read more…)

Paige attends a dinner party

Russian Czar Drink Recipe    Bartlett’s Rule

1 dash  orange Bitters
1 oz.  Grand Marnier
0.5 oz.  Lime juice
1 oz.  Vodka
3 oz.  Dry Sparkling White Wine

Directions:          Fill a mixing glass with ice and add all ingredients except wine. Shake and strain into a glass. Top with wine.

(blurb)

Bartlett’s Rule shares the story of Lon and Paige’s love affair; a romance filled with hardship, emotion, danger and triumph. Falling in love was never the challenge; being there for each other, knowing just what to say and making it work is the real test. Paige and Lon are real; they are human, they cry and they laugh. Paige has to learn to trust. Lon has to learn to be patient.

(excerpt)

Paige took a step back knowing that this pushy individual was not the type she wanted to be alone with. In the penthouse she had plenty of company to keep things safe and she could remain polite. Alone, she wasn’t sure what would happen. “That’s very sweet of you but unnecessary. I’ve already called for a cab.” She was very happy that she had kept her promise to Lon.

“You’re not going to even give me a chance, are you, Miss Andrews?”

“You are a lovely gentleman and I’m really flattered,” she answered tactfully. “But I am also in a rather serious relationship…”

“Oh? Why are you here alone then?” He smiled amiably.

Paige was pleased that he didn’t sound antagonistic. “He is out of town making some appearances for a book he’s written.”

“So you’re seeing a struggling writer?” He didn’t sound impressed. “I’m sure that’s very bohemian. That can’t be too much fun. Can’t I even tempt you to try a lifestyle of fancy yacht races and fashionable nightspots?”

She smiled comfortably. “Nope. Besides, I enjoy his lifestyle very much. I’m certainly not deprived of any comforts.”

He laughed cynically. “What is your boyfriend’s name? Maybe I’ve heard of him.”

“Lon Bartlett.”

He looked surprised. “The Lon Bartlett? Of Bartlett’s Rule?”

She nodded.

He whistled through his teeth. “I’m impressed.” Taking a few steps back, he looked her over. “I’ve read a lot of his work. So you’re the lady that’s cut him down to size.”

“You can’t cut a man like Lon down.” She sounded a little defensive.

“No one ever thought Bartlett would stop playing the field. That’s all I meant.” He shook his head. “That Bartlett is one lucky bastard …”

I am getting so excited about the VHP Virtual Dine-a-round that will be appearing here and other web-sites on Friday, Dec 17.

One of the more popular gifts being sent to servicemen and women of our coalition forces this holiday season is an e-book reader (Kindle, Sony, iPhone, Nook, Blackberry etc.)Here is the chance to fill those readers with lots of
great reading material – and e-books from Smashwords are available to read on web browsers and laptops/netbooks as well.

When I first signed up for Operation E-Book Drop via Smashwords and author Ed Patterson I had six books – today I have nine books. Also increasing in numbers is the amount of authors who are participating in this wonderful program – on Oct 31, 2010, Mark Coker, the founder of Smashwords, said “Ed Patterson informs me over 500 indie authors are now participating in Operation Ebook Drop. Awesome! Congrats to all.”

I am pleased to say that I am STILL a participating author in Operation E-Book Drop.

Servicemen and women of our Coalition Forces are away from home and putting themselves on the line for the rest of us. No matter what your political beliefs are, most of us agree that we need to support our men and women as we pray for their safe return.

All coalition military personnel deployed overseas who need multi-format ebooks are eligible. According to Ed, “If you’re overseas and away from your home and loved ones, your dependence on reading might increase – and so we are gifting you ebooks for Kindle, Sony, iPhone, Blackberry etc.”
For free ebooks, please email Ed at ed w pat @ att . net (remove the spaces)
What is Operation E-Book Drop?

Author Ed Patterson had an online conversation with a soldier stationed in Iraq who was having difficulty getting books to read on his Kindle – there isn’t a whole lot to do for entertainment there. Ed sent the soldier a complete file of his books in Kindle format – and then the idea struck him that there might be other soldiers and other authors who would want to participate. Sure enough, lists started to form and books were being sent over the internet in various e-book formats.

Then the wonderful staff at Smashwords found out about this effort and decided to promote the program – Smashwords authors can use special coupon codes to send the members of the Coalition Forces so they can download books to their reading devices. Since Smashwords offers books in several ebook formats (including Kindle, Palm, .pdf and more), books are readable on all reading devices and even with a web browser.

Kimberlee at Vanilla Heart Publishing made sure that any VHP authors who wanted had the proper coupon codes to send…

Featuring the short story STORMY WEATHER by Chelle Cordero

(excerpt)

The sun felt like it was burning into her skin. Even SPF-25 didn’t stand up to the wind burn.

It was just too easy to be lazy and lie there on the towel. The wind was kicking up and she felt grains of sand skitter across her skin every now and then. She wasn’t alone, there were a few diehards still on the beach. The running feet kicked up clumps of sand finally annoyed her enough to sit up and dust herself off.

“Surfers,” she mumbled and shook her head. Storms always brought them out. The wind kicked up the surf and the waves swelled. Debbie was compelled to watch two figures riding a huge crest and cringed when she saw one tumble into the crashing foam, his board flying in after him.

Groaning, she finally stood and brushed some of the sand from her arms. Debbie walked to the water’s edge and was amazed to realize how much closer it was to the towel she was lying on than when she first picked out a spot. At least she would get her feet wet before she packed up her belongings and trudged back to the hotel.

She was standing in ankle deep water when a wave crashed into her at chest height. She was knocked off balance and wound up sitting in the wet sand as the water threatened to pull her in. The salty water passed her lips and she sputtered and tried to catch her breath.

“You okay?” A bronze god squatted beside her. His hand rested on her back to support her in case she actually collapsed.
