“Success is 99% attitude and 1% aptitude.” You hear this sort of garbage all the time — it’s a particularly American mantra — but I disagree. It fits with “you can be anything you want to be”, which is patent nonsense. (I want to be King Tut! If I want hard enough, I can do it!)
Same with success. You need way more than 1% talent. Let’s say you’re competing against a person who works as hard as you but has more innate talent. You’ll lose every time. If you’re striving for success in a really popular arena like baseball or tennis (or novel writing), you might easily be up against 1000 or 10,000 hard workers with more talent. Which means you’re pretty much screwed no matter how hard you work.
Just my opinion.
